VHS tape has a finite lifespan. Most tapes recorded in the 1980s and 90s are already past their reliable playback window. We digitise VHS, S-VHS, and Betamax using engineering-grade hardware and locked processing baselines — for anyone who wants it done properly, before it's too late.
Professional-grade capture — not consumer kit
Fully offline. Zero cloud dependency
4K ProRes master — archival grade
Chain-of-custody tracked, start to finish
Most digitisation services run consumer hardware through cheap capture cards and call it done. We built a purpose-designed pipeline — professional VCRs, frame TBCs, calibrated capture, lossless archiving, AI-assisted restoration — because what's on those tapes can't be recaptured.
Every job runs through the same locked, versioned workflow. Same hardware. Same codecs. Same QC checkpoints. No shortcuts, no variables, no surprises.
Magnetic tape doesn't degrade on a schedule. It degrades now — slowly, continuously, invisibly. Tapes recorded in the 1980s and 90s are already at or past the point where reliable playback is no longer guaranteed.
The polyurethane binder holding oxide to the base absorbs moisture and breaks down. Affected tape sheds oxide on playback — destroying both the tape and the heads.
As binder fails, the magnetic oxide layer separates. Signal is lost permanently. There is no restoration process that recovers signal from physically missing oxide.
Even well-stored tape loses magnetic signal strength over decades. The window for a clean capture narrows every year. Playback itself accelerates the process.
The best time to digitise was ten years ago. The second best time is now.
Your tape is logged, labelled, and assigned a session ID the moment it arrives. Condition noted.
Full PAL resolution, lossless YUV 4:2:2. Audio at 48kHz. No re-encoding. No quality loss.
Frame-level review, then QTGMC deinterlacing and AI upscaling where the footage warrants it.
4K ProRes master plus your original tape, returned in the condition we received it.
Holidays, weddings, children growing up. Handled with care, delivered properly, original returned. No USB sticks, no DVDs.
Full chain-of-custody documentation. Session records. Offline processing. Volume pricing available for larger collections.
Offline infrastructure means your client's footage never passes through third-party servers. Session records support rights and delivery requirements.
Professional capture. Lossless archiving. Delivered right.
Full-resolution digitisation, session tracking, lossless ProRes delivery, original returned.
Everything in Standard, plus restoration and priority handling.
Adds QTGMC deinterlacing, AI-assisted upscaling, enhanced QC, and priority turnaround.
Every tape passes through the same documented, versioned process. Here's exactly what happens — and why each step matters.
Your tape is assigned a unique session ID and logged at intake. Format, condition, and any visible damage are noted. From that moment, every action — capture, processing, QC, return — is tied to that session record.
We handle material that often exists in one place only. A complete audit trail isn't optional — it's how we work.
Professional VCRs with line-level TBCs stabilise the signal before it reaches the capture chain. Audio is muxed simultaneously at 48kHz — no drift, no separate sync required.
Footage is captured to lossless UtVideo YUV 4:2:2 at full PAL resolution. No re-encoding. No generation loss. The session master is the single source of truth for everything that follows.
The session master is reviewed for dropped frames, audio drift, and signal anomalies before processing begins. Problems are logged and — where possible — resolved through re-capture or targeted correction.
Nothing moves forward until QC signs off.
Not every tape needs AI restoration — Standard digitisation produces clean, archival-quality output on its own. For footage with interlacing artefacts or visible degradation, we apply VapourSynth QTGMC deinterlacing and, where upscaling is warranted, Real-ESRGAN in a coherence-first configuration.
We don't hallucinate detail that wasn't there. Every AI-processed job is manually reviewed before delivery.
Final output is a 4K ProRes master — uncompressed, archival grade, the definitive copy. Your original tape is returned with your delivery. Session records retained. Derivative formats available on request.
The difference isn't subtle. Consumer-grade digitisation introduces artefacts that are invisible until you look closely — and irreversible once the transfer is done.
Tape degrades with every playback. A poor-quality transfer doesn't just produce a mediocre file — it consumes one of the remaining good plays of a tape that's already ageing. The four comparisons below show what consumer hardware introduces at each stage, and what's lost permanently when it does.
Straightforward pricing, no hidden costs. Both tiers include full chain-of-custody tracking and lossless session master archiving.
Professional capture. Lossless archiving. Delivered right.
Good for: Personal and family footage in reasonable condition, organisational archives that need reliable digitisation without additional restoration.
Everything in Standard, plus restoration and priority handling.
Good for: Footage with visible degradation, historically significant material, or anything where quality matters above all else.

'Offline' isn't a limitation. It's a deliberate engineering decision — and it changes how every job is handled.
Most modern digitisation pipelines offload processing to cloud infrastructure. Your footage passes through third-party servers you have no visibility into. Ours doesn't. Our entire pipeline runs on dedicated, air-gapped hardware. Your material doesn't leave our facility until it's delivered to you.
Consumer services produce inconsistent results because their workflows have too many variables. Our capture runs against a locked, versioned baseline. Hardware fixed. Codecs fixed. Parameters documented. Every job is reproducible — if you ever needed to reprocess your session master, we could, and it would produce an identical result.
Chain-of-custody tracking is built into the workflow from the start. From intake to return, every action is documented. This matters for private clients who want peace of mind, and for institutions who need to demonstrate provenance and handling integrity.
We're a small operation and we intend to stay that way. Small means every job gets individual attention, every decision gets made by a person, and we're accountable for the quality of our work in a way that large-volume services aren't.
If you want fast and cheap, we're probably not the right fit. If you want your footage treated as the archive it is, we are.
